I get a lot of questions on how to start a blog. That’s such a broad question. There are a series of steps such as choosing a topic, choosing a domain name, choosing a host, choosing a blogging platform, etc. I could write for the next two months and just scratch the surface of what I’ve learned in four and half years blogging. I’m not going to write a lot over the next two months though… I have a lot of other blogs to start and promote. However, once a week, I’ll make an effort to get an article written here. Many weeks I’ll probably fail. That’s just the way it is for now.

I’ll start with two tips of advice:

Write about what you love – Write about what you are passionate about. If you aren’t excited about it, it will be a chore. You won’t want to write and your readers won’t want to read it. It’s a recipe for an epic fail.

Read Advice for New Personal Finance Bloggers – I wrote an article a few years back and while some of it may be dated, a lot of it is still relevant today. It is geared towards personal finance bloggers, but a lot of it can be applied to a blog on any topic.

A blog about blogging?

If it’s one thing I hate, it’s a blog about blogging. The circular nature of it gets to me. It reminds me of the guy peddling his get real estate program on late night television. Do you know how he makes most of his money? It’s not from the real estate program… it’s by selling his program to you.

At the same time, if you have knowledge that others would find helpful, why wouldn’t you want to share it? If you might be able to make a dollar at the same time, all the more power to you… I think the key difference is that you should earn trust by demonstrating the value of the product up front.

I aim to sell next to nothing on this site. I don’t want your money unless you are thoroughly convinced I can help you turn that investment into much more. Instead, I’d rather have you support the advertisers on this site. That’s seems like a win for you, a win for them, and finally a win for myself.

The Make Money Online Myth

There are a lot of blogs that promise making money online. The most famous is probably John Chow. He is extremely popular and does a fantastic job with this blog. His content is simply telling people how to make money. Other people see how much money he makes and they get excited to duplicate his success. The problem is that you have a million blogs more or less pushing many of the same products, and not teaching people the basics of how to blogging on a subject other than blogging. The vast majority of these million online marketing blogs have very few readers.

This will not be a make money online blog. This will will focus on teaching others how to blog and the benefits of blogging if done well.
